holiday card faux pas

This serves as a PSA on behalf of holiday card-receiving Jews everywhere.

Every year I have at least one friend who buys a big box of Christmas cards. Not "Happy Holiday" cards but ones that specifically say "Merry Christmas" on there. Instead of sending me a Hannukah or a generic "Happy Holidays" card, I receive a Merry Christmas card with the words "Merry Christmas" crossed out and "Happy Hannukah" written over them in pen.

Please, please, please for the love of all things that are holy, do not do this. It is so tacky and just shows that you couldn't take out the time to buy just one extra card for a friend. This year I have vowed that if anyone sends me a Merry Christmas card for Hannukah, I will return the favor by sending them a Happy Hannukah card for Christmas. (What? You mean you don't light a Menorah for Christmas?)

  1. Haha I love it! I can't believe someone actually crossed out Merry Christmas and wrote in Happy Hannukah! Who does that??

  2. That is completely rude and tacky. I always make it an effort to send Happy Holiday cards. I can't believe they did that. Obviously they must not be a good friend.

  3. That is the Tackiest thing I have every heard of! We do that with Birthday cards sometimes...like crossing out 1st and writing 31st or something cuz the kid cards are sometimes way moore adorable but.... Christmas/Hannukah that isnt right at all..... I am so sorry that someone actually did that..... wow....

  7. Lord have mercy, I can't believe someone did that! I'm using my Lilly Pulitzer "Happy Holidays" cardsfor my friends who don't celebrate Christmas.

  8. If we were exchanging cards I would find you a happy hannukah card! I had an incident with the man at the post office last year because I mailed the cards for my mother and he tried to sell me Kwanzaa stamps as an alternative!

  11. Hysterical! And so very true. I always buy a box of Happy Holidays cards for my friends who do not celebrate Christmas, or those that I am not sure of because they are new friends. I cannot believe people have written over Merry Christmas on your cards in the past. Blech!

  13. I'm tempted to do it just because, LOL. I think a Happy Hannakuh card would look nice on my mantel and it would certainly generate conversation. ;0)

  14. I think that crossing out Merry Christmas and writing Happy Hannukah is extremely tacky... However I must say that our Christmas cards say "Merry Christmas" and have a happy new year message as well. I have Jewish friends, non religious friends, etc... and they all receive that card. I wouldn't be offended if my Jewish friends sent me a Happy Hannukah card and don't think saying Merry Christmas to someone who doesn't celebrate it is rude either. I think that we can each embrace our holidays and there is nothing tacky about sharing my traditions with you and vice versa. Just my opinion.
