Say Yes to the Dress?

Anyone who's been following my blog and twitter long enough knows that I have a slight obsession when it comes to wedding shows, particularly Say Yes to the Dress. When it came time for me to go dress shopping, there was no question that Kleinfeld would be THE place for me to buy my dress. I made an appointment to go a week from This coming Tuesday, and got an email asking me if I want to be on the show.

On the one hand, I am completely giddy over the fact that one of my favorite shows wants little old me to be a part of it. Also, while you don't officially get anything as compensation for being on the show, you are definitely likely to get treated a lot better and maybe get a slight discount on your dress for being a part of the show.

On the other hand, I am an only child and an only grandchild. I am also the first person in my family to have a traditional wedding. This means that this day is a big deal to my family. My Nana has been saving up to buy my dress for me for years. As a result of this, I completely understand that my wedding dress budget is higher than that of the average bride in the U.S. currently getting married. I am not sure how comfortable I am going on national television and talking about money and how much my dress cost, especially in an economic period when people are losing their jobs left and right.

I'm still excited that they asked me for the show and I don't know what to do. All of my friends think that this is like the coolest thing ever and I absolutely have to go on it.

So bloggers, I have to ask, if you were in my shoes, what would you do?
Should I Say Yes to the Dress?

ETA: After mulling it over and watching two more episodes of the show this morning, I decided to turn it down. I am a private person and am not comfortable having both my and TLS's full names used on the show. Plus, a lot of the friends and families are made to look crazy on the show. I understand that it's just editing. It's one thing if a tv show editor wants to make me look like bridezilla, but it is not fair to have my family and friends painted in a negative light on national television.

  1. I say absolutely because what an amazing experience that would be!!! I, too, watch Say Yes to the Dress and think no differently of the gals who have "umlimited" budgets and those who have very small budgets. People get what's in their price range and that's that. The only time I get annoyed by any of the brides is when she goes on and acts like a diva beyotch. I know you wouldn't do that so... do it! What a great, great story AND you might get to meet Randy!!!

  3. Do it! Then you can tell us what it's like behind the scenes!

  4. I think you should do it. If you explain that your fam has been saving for this big day, I think it could actually encourage brides that they can still have a great dress (even in these economic times) if they play it smart and save. I think it could actually be a positive thing. ;o)

  5. Oh my goodness, what a great opportunity! That would be a dream. I want to tell you SAY YES YES YES!! However, it's your big day so follow your heart. If you tell them your concerns perhaps they can work around that, sometimes they just flash the budget on the screen, and will just say they met the budget?!

  6. I'm going to dissent here and put on my "older sister" hat. My hesitations in participating would be (1) Privacy -- I believe your first and last name are used? and (2) Editing--Will you have any say in how your segment is edited? Meaning, if TLC chooses to edit in a certain way, they may not portray the situation how it really was.

On an aside, I think you would be completely adorable on there and yes, it would be great to see a glimpse of your special experience. However, I don't think I would personally do it.

Whatever you decide is the RIGHT decision :)

  7. SAY YES!! When else in life are you going to have this opportunity? Never. I vote go for it!

  8. I'd definitely go for it! Yes, people will judge you for your choices, but are those really people whose opinions you care about anyway?

  9. Do it!!!!!!! How exciting ;-)

  11. Omgoodness you should do it! You need to represent us Military Wives also! I completely agree with the other ladies, yes, yes YES you HAVE to! I'm so excited for you! LOL

  12. YES! Do it! Just think it'll give you an opportunity to tell your story and show how grateful you are to your family for their generosity! No one can fault you for generous family members! If you go in with that attitude, you will shine! I would absolutely DIE to see you on the show! :-)

  13. I would agree! I don't judge anyone based on their budget when watching the show. I've seen people with small budgets come out with gorgeous dresses, and people with huge budgets come out with what i consider hideous dresses! I think its very sensitive of you, but you should not apologize for the fact that this day is important to your family and they have saved you money. There are always going to be people who judge, say, even a $1,000 budget because they feel its extravagant to spend that much on a dress you wear once. SCREW 'EM! Do it as long as you and TLS feel comfortable with it, that's the most important thing

  14. Haha, that's so great! Go for it and good luck!

  15. How fun! Since I love that show I say do it in a heartbeat! but I do understand your dilema. I often wonder how these brides have so much to spend on a dress, but I think it would be a cute angle if Nana were on it! Soo excited for you!

  16. Masha!
    OMG!
I am an only child and only grandchild, too! I've never met anyone else with this situation!
((This was good for me to read today considering I just had a mini-breakdown re: missing my grandfather))
I say follow your gut with this one, Sister. Seems like you're already questioning things.....

  17. Oh absolutely you should go on the show! What an honor and experience! Congrats! Let us know how it all goes! :)

  18. Say yes! It's not about the amount of money you have, but how you handle yourself. You exude nothing but grace, class and beauty. I could see things getting nasty if you were a jerk to the saleslady and flaunted your budget, but I'm confident you will do neither! So go for it and enjoy, you deserve it!

PS I'm also an only child and grandchild, so I appreciate the importance of this day. I think if your family is on board it would be a special experience for all of you!

  19. You know where we are Miss Masha, concurring with Natalie and Staci. It's not a function of what one does or doesn't spend on a dress, it just seems like a fairly private and special process, not one consumed by cameras for sharing with thousands of people.

    Sending you a big hug,

  20. No. Don't do it. While it would be exciting to be on tv, I've seen VERY FEW episodes of SYTTD where the bride or her family is portrayed in a flattering light. Enjoy this special moment for you. And yours. Because once the episode comes out, if you don't like what they did with it, it might cast a shadow over what's supposed to be such a happy time for you two!

  21. I don't judge when it comes to budgets on SYTTD. When the time comes for me, I will have a very small budget. It's about you and your day. I say do what you feel. If you don't mind it being aired on national tv then go for it. But if you don't want your name and stuff to be public information, then I say no. However, I do think it would be a great experience and especially if they would hook you up with a discount. Keep us updated!!!

  22. I would say no mainly because I had a friend who went on it and the way they edited the parts actually made her mother look bad. I think if you have any hesitation I would not do it. Remember they make it look good so we do watch it...

  23. Alright, BFF JILL here. So I've two thoughts b/c I've been seriously mulling over it and I talked to Jen and Meg (and Lexie) and everyone at my office (so that's 9 more women).

    1. This is like, YOUR FAVORITE SHOW and they'll give you a copy of the tape and forever and ever you'll have professionally shot footage of the day you bought THE DRESS. That's awesome.

    2. Other women here have echoed this sentiment, and I know you well enough to say that you can be very private and the whole planet will watch you try on dresses and select the final dress...which takes the mystery (and some of the fun and surprise) of the moment those doors open and you walk down the isle.

Despite my initial reaction which was YES DO IT NOW OMGWTFBBQ, I am changing my vote to a 'It actually sounds like you don't really want to and are just looking to hear someone say that its okay to say No to K'feld'.
