discussion topic of the day- recession, take 2

In this post, I asked you what is the one thing that you can never scrimp on, or go without, regardless of finances. For today's post, I'm going to do a follow-up to that and ask what is the first thing to go or that you are willing to go without when money is tight? For me, it is my Starbucks habit. While I love Starbucks, I can go without it, and considering the cost of the drinks, I'm willing to sacrifice it if money is tight or there is something else that I really, really, really want. For your daily dose of irony- I am typing this post with a venti Chai Latte a mere 2" from my keyboard.

  2. I'll have to agree and say Starbucks. I really only get it on the weekends, so it wouldn't be too hard to give up, but I still always look forward to it!

  5. I have gone without cash! I use to get $60 out of the atm every Monday to spend on coffee, lunch,or fun non-sense! Now I take my lunch and only get Starbucks on Fridays.

  8. I think for me it would be going to the movies. While I do love watching in the theatre & eating yummmy popcorn I'm just as happy watching a DVD in my pajamas on the couch!

  9. Hmmm, I think I would use less expensive cosmetics, I don't need to get everything at Nordstrom right?

  10. I'll bring lunch instead of buy it, make a frappucino at home instead of buying it, embrace the idea of public transport instead of driving my car, wax my own brows and paint my own nails, but I will not forgo the expense of getting my hair professionally cut and coloured.

  11. I've started doing my own nails and using less expensive makeup (I've actually discovered I like Neutrogena foundation better than Clinique!), but I agree with Kara, I can not give up getting my hair professionally done!

  12. I have to say shopping. Nothing new for my living space then no new clothes. Next would be books followed by dining out. I will never ever ever give up stopping for a sweet tea though.

  14. Starbucks could charge $20 each and I would still hav eto pay it, addiction is addiction for a reason.

Actually, a little less of everything suits me better than cutting out one thing entirely. I live lean anyway, my people were frugal of the buy one of the best rather than hundreds of the reset sorts... quality over quantity and things go a lot further...

  15. I've been thinking about this for several days now and while it needs some clarification (which I will provide) my answer is grocerices.

I am the WORLDS WORST grocery shopper. I love to linger in the international and vegan areas and I am always trying something new.

I also never remember to get: Milk, Eggs, Meat, Butter, or laundry detergent.

I am a sucker for the "10 for $10" deals (Why yes I DO have a need in my life for 10 packages of cupcake cups/yellow vitamin water/30pk disposable sporks)

That being said I do seasonal large shops where I buy loads of bread, pb&j, lean cusines, and soups and store it all away and freeze the bread....and promptly forget about it.

Everynight on my drive home (unless you count the last two weeks of very late nights in which case I have survived thanks to the nice folks at Noodles & Co.) I stop by the nice grocery and pick up somehting fresh. (Could be sushi, could be a fresh basil panini, etc)

When I'm low on cash I head home and have soup or PB&J or cereal (though usually then I curse myself for having forgotten to get milk - AGAIN).

Other than that I don't really spen crazy. I live my life by a budget that I have committed to memory and I know RIGHT AWAY when something is up b/c I have about 5 sub-checking accounts (helping me budget) and when when is low and auto-pulls from my main checking I get an email. :)

  16. I'll go with diet cokes and snacks that I'll pick up at the gas station or from the vending machine at work. If money is tight I usually eat much healthier bc I pretty much cut out all fast food and save going out for special occasions.
