Etsy?

So I apologize for the constant stream of blog posts today but I have an idea that I would like some bloggers' advice on. As many of you know, one of my passions in life is baking. I bake a lot and then end up sending cookies to my friends because I can't possibly eat all that I bake. A few people have suggested that I open a bakery and while I would love to, this is completely not feasible. Lately, I have been toying around with the idea of opening a bakery on Etsy. I know there are quite a few on there, but personally, I am a little skeptical about buying baked goods off the internet. Has anyone done this before? For those bloggers who have Etsy stores, can you tell me more about the process and if you think it will be worth it? Any other suggestions/pearls of wisdom/advice? Should I go for it? Yay or nay?

  1. I wrote yesterday on blog 2 about how I am guilty of buying too many baked goods off of the internet. But if something looks good, I just can't help myself!

So yes, I have purchased items (all through etsy) and I haven't had one bad transaction. It seemed sketchy to me the first time I bought something, but every transaction has been so seamless that I don't even think twice about it now.

I'm going to write soon about how I bought my boyfriend's birthday "pie" online, and how it was one of the best desserts I've ever had.

So I think you should go for it. I will be one of your first customers. :)

  2. It would be so cute if you opened an etsy bakery! I also have been slighty sceptical about buying food items on etsy but I know that alot of sellers do really well. I think the key is to have good pictures on them. It shows that you are serious and want to have a business on etsy. I've seen pictures of baked goods on etsy that look like they were taken in dugeon. hah. Whatever you decide, good luck!!

  5. I have two shops on Etsy and they both do really well. I love it - the people are great. I also know a few people that sell baked goods on Etsy that have successful shops so I say go for it! :)

  6. Hmmm... well I think that I'm going to have to ask you to send me a bakers dozen so I can judge for myself the feasibility of your success!

Haha! I think that's a great idea - you could even look into cute gift packaging (pink and green perhaps?) so people could send cookie-grams to their friends!

  7. I don't have much advice but I have friends who have ordered from etsy and have been pleased. I personally wouldn't think anything about it. I'm sure there are some sort of requirement- right? Maybe not? You should email Laura from A Dozen Eggs (on my blogroll). She has a bakery but she might be able to give you some advice for just starting out. Good luck! And let us know when you get a shop going. I have come to love etsy. I buy and sell on there. It is so easy to sell- they walk you through the easy steps and the fee is very reasonable.

  8. you could also try posting on your blog since readers are familiar with you; which can also direct more traffic to your etsy page. I would totally buy if you could specify shapes...such as a purse shaped cake ;)

  9. I am so excited!! I had no idea you could buy baked goods on Etsy...I just never looked. Now I have one more excuse for not going grocery shopping. If you open an Etsy bakery I will definately buy from you!!

  10. Sorry....I got so excited about cookies that I forgot to answer your question. I think you should try it. Let me know if you do and I will advertise it on my blog too. The best piece of advice I can give is to make sure you account for all your costs and time before you set your prices. Etsy is such a great way to start a business with little cost.

  11. Include personalized cakes. I would buy too. I have to try your goodies as you've mentioned you are really good at baking!

  12. it's funny i just read this because early this morning (while perusing etsy as i normally do), i stumbled across an etsy bakery. i had never seen one before.

i will say that i was a tad skeptical, BUT i think if you gave it a really fun, professional look, it would go over VERY well.
